Ever since Rob lost all his weight like five years ago (six? can't remember), I have been saying each spring, "Oh yeah, I'll do a 5K race with you sometime." Finally, this year was the year, thanks to the treadmill. It turned out to be a gorgeous day. Just a little chilly, but blue skies and beautiful. The race was at the Alum Creek dam, which was pretty neat.
I'll admit, when I woke up this morning, I thought about wimping out, because I hate getting up anywhere near 7AM on a Sunday morning. That's definitely when I should be sleeping. But, I got up and we went up to the race site. I was having a little bit of nerves and feeling almost sick to my stomach, but I get that sometimes in the mornings any way. We got registered for the race and just waited around, getting stretched out and warmed up for a half hour or so.
Finally it was go time and we were off. It started out flat, but then sloped up into this long incline up the road to get to where we could cross onto the actual dam. I told myself I was going to make it to the top of the hill without walking, and I did, even if it was a pretty slow running pace. Then I had to walk for a little while because I was feeling pukey. Rob was so awesome. He has a pretty long stride and runs at a pretty fast pace, but he stayed right beside me the whole time even when I wanted to walk. If you can imagine, he's 6'5" tall and I'm 5'3" so our paces are vastly different.
We ran a little ways across the top of the bridge before walking again until we got to the turn around spot to head back. I liked the idea of going back much better because I knew it would be downhill back the way we came. Knowing it was downhill most of the way, I was determined to run the whole way back, and I did!
I don't know how long exactly it took us. Could have been 38 minutes, could have been 43ish. I don't know if they started the clock for the 5K or 5 minutes later for the 10K runners. Either way, I was happy with that time! I can run a 5K on the treadmill in about 38-40 minutes.
The wind is a real killer, though. Made my throat all kinds of scratchy. Cold air is rough. But it was good, and we were triumphant!
Probably gonna do another one next weekend. I'm all about the Commit to be Fit this year, which is what next Saturday's 5K is all about.
